When I Think Of Eli

"When I think about my mentor... The memory that immediately comes to mind isn't when I first met Eli as a cub, or the moment Ceres announced me as his apprentice and we had to 'formally' introduce ourselves in front of the Empire.  The moment I remember is the day he visited me while I was recovering from my injuries in Bird's den.  Or at least... the first time that I was awake for one of his visits.  Since, well, Eli told me he'd been checking up on me everyday, heheh.  Must've been out for a while...

He asked how I was feeling, and I told him I'd had worse, despite the fact that the look on my face and the already soaked bandages likely said otherwise.  I told him I was sorry.  That I shouldn't have yelled at Plato, because then he wouldn't have run out into the forest and straight into a bear.  That I shouldn't have been so rash when I tried to protect him.  That I should have remembered what little training I'd had, and that maybe if I had fought a little smarter, I wouldn't be in here like... this.

But Eli?  He just smiled at me, and told me that all he wanted was for me to focus on getting better.  And in that moment, he wasn't just my cub-sitter or my mentor... but someone who was, and always would be, my best friend."
